Minutes of a Meeting of the Arenas, Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee Held on Tuesday, May 17, 2016 in the Sutherland Room, City Hall.

 

The Arenas, Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee meeting was called to order by Gary Rabjohn, Chair at 5:30 p.m. in the Sutherland Room.

Accessible Beaches

That the Arenas Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee approve the recommendations outlined in Report APRAC16-014, dated May 17, 2016 of the Accessibility and Communication Specialist as follows:

a)            That Report APRAC16-014 with respect to options to provide beach access routes at the two City-owned public beaches be received for information;

b)           That staff be directed to investigate options to provide accessible beach access routes at the two City-owned public beaches, and report back at a future meeting.

Jackson Creek Neighbourhood Association

That the Arenas Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee approve the recommendations outlined in Report APRAC16-015 dated May 17, 2016, of the Recreation Division Coordinator, as follows:

 

That staff be directed to:

 

i)          Assist the representatives of the Jackson Creek Meadows subdivision, to establish a Neighbourhood Association, with the goal of developing amenities within the subdivision’s parkland, through the Community Assistance Program; and

 

ii)         Report back to the Arenas Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee once the Neighbourhood Association has been established and the details of a specific project are identified.

Outdoor Water Play Facilities 10-Year Capital Strategy

That the Arenas, Parks and recreation Advisory Committee approve the recommendation outlined in Report APRAC16-017 dated May 17, 2016, of the Manager of Facilities and Special Projects, the Parks and Forestry Supervisor, and the Recreation Division Coordinator, as follows:

 

That the ten-year strategy to address the City’s water play facility needs as detailed in Chart 1 of Report APRAC16-017 be endorsed and recommended for consideration by City Council in the City’s 10-year capital program.

Community Garden Presentation

That the Arenas Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee approve the recommendation outlined in Report APRAC16-018 dated May 17, 2016, of the Recreation Division Coordinator, as follows:

 

That a presentation by Jill Bishop, Community Food Cultivator, with the Nourish Project be received as an update on local community gardening activity, and the work of the Peterborough Community Garden Network.

Nevin Park Community Garden

That the Arenas Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee approve the recommendation outlined in Report APRAC16-016 dated May 17, 2016, of the Recreation Division Coordinator, as follows:

 

That the request to establish a community garden within Nevin Park be denied, and that alternate sites be investigated within the area.

That Nevin Park be approved as a Community Garden site for a two-year trial period, and

 

That staff report back to the Committee by the end of 2017 following an assessment of the success of the trial period.

Other Business

 

The Grand Opening of the Sports Fields at Trent University will be held June 21^st at 1:00 p.m.

 

The Chair wished Mary Gallop well in her retirement.

The Chair indicated that the next meeting is scheduled for June 21, 2016.
