The Accessibility Advisory Committee
recommends that effective January 1, 2014 the City of Peterborough act to
remove barriers when constructing new or redeveloping existing trail entrances.
As directed by the AAC, staff research
finds the minimum opening for accessibility to be 1,000 mm. This coincides with
the upper limit of the Section 80.9.7 of the Integrated Accessibility
Standards 191/11, Design of Public Spaces. Section 80.9.7 of the regulation
states “entrances to a recreational trail provide a clear opening of between
850 mm and 1,000 mm whether the entrance includes a gate, bollard or other
entrance design”. This will allow mobility devices of varying sizes to enter
The City of Peterborough trails.
The AAC also suggests that Utility
Services seek funding from the Access Fund to assist in the retro-fit of
existing trail entrances to meet the proposed 1,000 mm clear opening.
“CARRIED”
